Provincial Government Recognizes Human Rights Day

The Provincial Government is pleased to acknowledge and celebrate 2014’s International Human Rights Day. Since the United Nations’ adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10, 1948, this date has been celebrated by governments, organizations and individuals with an aim of bringing attention to the declaration as the common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations. This year’s slogan Human Rights 365 encompasses the idea that every day is Human Rights Day.

“This government believes strongly that everyone should be afforded the broad range of human rights, and that we should all stand together to ensure that that individuals in this province and around the world are protected from discrimination and harassment. I encourage the people of the province to join the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador in acknowledging International Human Rights Day and to reflect on the importance of promoting equality, understanding, and mutual respect for all.”
- The Honourable Judy Manning, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights outlines common principles that individuals, groups, and countries use as guiding examples to uphold; these include political, civil, cultural, social, and economic rights.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, the Human Rights Commission is responsible for ensuring that the law of human rights in the province is upheld. The commission promotes an understanding of and acceptance of human rights as outlined in the Human Rights Act which was proclaimed by the Provincial Government in 2010.
