Enhancing Fire Safety and Services in Communities

Investment of Approximately $190,000 Supports Fire Services in District of Harbour Main and Bay de Grave Regional Fire Department

The Provincial Government is investing approximately $190,000 to enhance firefighting capacity in the District of Harbour Main and at the Bay de Grave Regional Fire Department. The Honourable Judy Manning, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador, was joined by Tom Hedderson, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development and MHA for the District of Harbour Main, and Glenn Littlejohn, Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly and MHA for the District of Port de Grave, for the announcement.

“The funding announced today will greatly enhance the safety of residents in the Districts of Harbour Main and Port de Grave. With approximately $190,000 in total funding allocated for the purchase of a new rescue vehicle and firefighting equipment, the Provincial Government is demonstrating its continued support of fire protection services in communities throughout the province, while at the same time ensuring that those who fight fires and perform emergency responses are properly equipped to do their jobs.”

The announcement today includes approximately $175,000 for the purchase of a rescue vehicle for the Bay de Grave Regional Fire Department, which is situated in South River and serves the communities of South River, North River, Makinsons, Clarke’s Beach and Cupids. These communities are located throughout the Districts of Harbour Main and Port de Grave. In addition, over $15,000 in funding has been allocated for the purchase of four sets of Personal Protective Equipment and six pagers for the community of Colliers, and a portable pump for Conception Harbour. Both Colliers and Conception Harbour are located in the District of Harbour Main.

The rescue vehicle and firefighting equipment will be cost-shared, with the Provincial Government providing 90 per cent of the funding and the recipient communities covering the remaining 10 per cent. Detailed information regarding these investments is contained in the backgrounder below.
