Supporting Fire Protection to Ensure Safe Communities

Investment Enhances Firefighting Equipment for the District of Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune

The Honourable Judy Manning, Minister of Public Safety and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced that approximately $41,000 in funding is being provided for the purchase of firefighting equipment in the District of Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune. This investment is in addition to $25,000 that was announced in August to purchase two new, self-contained breathing apparatuses and an all-terrain vehicle for the Francois fire department.

“The Provincial Government is grateful to the volunteers who respond around the clock to fires and emergencies in their communities, and surrounding areas. The new Department of Public Safety formed by Premier Davis is focused on ensuring safe communities across the province. Supporting the women and men who put their lives at risk for the safety of others is a major priority for government, and these investments exemplify that support.”

Funding will be used to purchase vehicle extrication equipment for Harbour Breton, two Self Contained Breathing Apparatuses for Hermitage-Sandyville, two sets of Personal Protective Equipment each for Seal Cove-Fortune Bay and Milltown, and a pump for Gaultois.

“The announcements made today will benefit the hard working volunteers who operate in the district. Our firefighters are very special people who provide an invaluable service to residents, and I am delighted with the supports announced today to improve our services in the Coast of Bays”.
- Tracey Perry, MHA for the District of Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune

The equipment for each community will be cost-shared, with the Provincial Government providing 90 per cent and communities covering the remaining 10 per cent. Detailed information on these investments is contained in the backgrounder below.
