Improving Fire Protection for Safe Communities

Investment of $46,000 Enhances Fire Services in the District of Grand Bank

In an effort to enhance public safety, over $46,000 in Provincial Government funding will be used to purchase firefighting equipment in the District of Grand Bank. The funding announcements were made by the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development and MHA for the District of Grand Bank.

“The safety of residents of Newfoundland and Labrador is a priority of the new Davis Government, as demonstrated by the recent establishment of the new Department of Public Safety. The provision of modern and reliable equipment to support the volunteer fire service in rural Newfoundland and Labrador is part of that commitment. This funding, recently announced in the district, was very well received. I look forward to working with communities throughout the region to ensure that public safety remains a priority.”
- The Honourable Judy Manning, Minister of Public Safety and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-NL

The funding will be used to purchase vehicle extrication equipment for the community of St. Lawrence, 10 pagers each for Lamaline and Lawn, a repeater for Winterland, two sets of Personal Protective Equipment for Lord’s Cove, and two ladders for Point May.

“The announcements made today will help save lives and will be of great benefit to the residents of the district. The vehicle extrication, communications, and safety equipment will help local volunteers respond more efficiently and effectively to emergencies in communities across the region.”
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development and MHA for the District of Grand Bank

The equipment for each community will be cost-shared, with the Provincial Government providing 90 per cent and communities covering the remaining 10 per cent. Detailed information on these investments is contained in the backgrounder below.

The new Department of Public Safety was created as part of the suite of positive changes the new government of Premier Paul Davis is implementing.
