Improving Safety and Security at Correctional Facilities
Provincial Government Implements New Safety Measures
The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice, today announced that new security measures have been implemented at correctional facilities in the province. These measures will enhance security for staff, inmates and community stakeholders.
“I recently met with representatives of corrections staff who brought forward some ideas on how we could make improvements in our correctional facilities, including Her Majesty’s Penitentiary. With the assistance of Superintendent Graham Rogerson, I carefully examined their recommendations and as a result, several initiatives will be implemented that will enhance safety and security.”

Notable changes are that correctional officers will begin carrying OC (pepper) spray at all times while at work. Also, a metal detector will be installed at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary in a strategic location. As well, two new transport vehicles have been ordered and are expected to be delivered sometime in the coming weeks.
“I have been adamant that safety of corrections staff and inmates is paramount. We support our corrections staff and when we are presented with ideas to make correctional facilities safer, we listen. With regards to Her Majesty’s Penitentiary, we will continue to make every effort to ensure that it is as safe and secure as possible as we continue the process of constructing a new correctional facility for the province.”
