Provincial Government Focused on Safety and Well-being of Residents

Government Receives External Reviews of Sheriff’s Office and Legal Aid

The Provincial Government has received the external reviews of the Sheriff’s Office and Legal Aid, commissioned by the Department of Justice in 2013. Retired RCMP Inspector Leigh DesRoches completed the Sheriff’s Office review while John Roil, Q.C., completed a review of Legal Aid.

“I wish to thank Mr. DesRoches and Mr. Roil for their work on these reviews. Our ultimate goal of a responsive and efficient justice system in Newfoundland and Labrador remains and these reviews will be a valuable tool in assisting us with making some important decisions in the near future.”
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice

The external reviews were commissioned after a stakeholder committee was formed and met to discuss Budget 2013 initiatives related to the Department of Justice. Both reviews, as well as decisions related to recommendations, will be released as part of the 2014 budget process.

“This has been a very useful exercise and the independent assessments of these two aspects of the justice system will assist us in ensuring that services are provided in an efficient and effective manner. Any decisions we make as a result of these reviews will be made with the interests of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador in mind.”
- The Honourable Felix Collins, Attorney General

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to supporting important social programs, strong communities and the health and well-being of children, families and seniors.
