Strengthening the Economy Through Investments in Business Infrastructure

Over $1.6 Million Invested to Support the Long Harbour Industrial Supply Park

The Long Harbour Development Corporation is constructing a hydromet industrial supply park thanks in part to investments by the provincial and federal governments. The announcement was made today by the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development, and Senator Norman Doyle, on behalf of the Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency). This funding will support the construction of the supply park and help make the area more attractive to new and emerging businesses.

“Capitalizing on supplier development opportunities, particularly in terms of our major projects, is critical in Newfoundland and Labrador and can lead to new opportunities for all sizes of businesses. With such high levels of industrial activity in our province right now, our provincial investment of over $818,000, along with matched funding from ACOA, will strengthen the region’s ability to attract strong business partnerships and will provide greater opportunities for the people of our province. As legacy infrastructure, the industrial park provides capacity to meet future growth opportunities for the community and region.”
- The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development

With the current level of industrial activity throughout the province, development of regional industrial parks is often a key component in generating additional economic and business growth. In response to this activity, and in anticipation of future growth, the Long Harbor Development Corporation has identified the goal of making the Industrial Supply Park into a key piece of infrastructure in order to attract new industrial activity and businesses. The adjacency to Vale’s site is desirable for commercial tenants interested in supplying goods and services to this major project, as well as others in the region.

“The hydromet industrial supply park will provide the industrial capacity needed to facilitate the growth and development of the mining industry in Long Harbour-Mount Arlington Heights and provides potential for economic development throughout the region. The Government of Canada's committed to working in partnership with provinces and communities to improve the lives of Canadians so we are also happy to support the small towns readiness project with six towns working together to improve business opportunities that could create new jobs and grow the local economies.”
- Norman Doyle, Senator

The Industrial Supply Park development, which sits adjacent to Vale’s Hydromet Processing facility, will include road construction, bridging, fencing, water and sewer, electrical, landscaping, as well as marketing initiatives. The project will involve the development of 7.5 hectares of land into commercial semi-serviced sites.

“The development of this facility will not only assist with the Vale project, but will support emerging industrial activities now and into the future. It will provide opportunity for suppliers to deliver services to the plant, as well as employment to area residents long after completion of the construction phase. This announcement reflects our government’s ongoing commitment to growing the economy in the region.”
- The Honourable Felix Collins, Attorney General and MHA Placentia - St. Mary’s

The Long Harbour Development Corporation is a non-profit organization established to strengthen business opportunities in Long Harbour, and has been strategically building the assets of the organization in anticipation of industry growth opportunities in the area.

“Today’s announcement of $1.63 million in federal and provincial funding, in partnership with the Long Harbour Development Corporation, will significantly enhance the ability of our community to maximize the full economic development potential that is represented in being the host community for the multi-billion dollar Vale Hydromet Processing Plant.”
- Gary Keating, Mayor of Long Harbour - Mount Arlington Heights and Chairman of the Long Harbour Development Corporation.
