Energizing the Economy Through Investments in Rural Communities

Over $14,000 Supports Industrial Development in St. Mary’s Bay

To assist the Mount Carmel Fishermen and Recreation Committee’s efforts to complete the community’s wharf, the Provincial Government is providing funding totalling $14,169. Funding will be used to complete wharf improvements, including additional back-fill to existing cribbing and completion of drainage and sewer pipe installation.

“For communities to grow and thrive, they need sustainable infrastructure that supports their current and future needs. I am confident that this funding of $14,169 will assist with the work required to complete the wharf development in Mount Carmel, leading to growth in industrial development, a stronger community, and a strengthened local economy.”
- The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development

The completed wharf will be used to harbour barges owned by Northern Transportation Ltd., as well as provide amenities where vessel repairs can take place. The company plans to hire employees from the region to undertake the vessel repair work.

“The Mount Carmel Fishermen and Recreation Committee has done great work in developing these wharf facilities.  When completed, it will be an excellent asset to the community and to St. Mary’s Bay in general. The extra employment generated by this facility will also benefit the local economy.”
- Felix Collins, Attorney General and MHA for Placentia - St. Mary’s

Since 2007, the Provincial Government has provided $100,340 in funding to support wharf development in Mount Carmel. Development work has included the addition of cribbing, backfill, and development of a laydown area.

“The support we have received from the Provincial Government is greatly appreciated. It will make a significant difference for this project and will be helpful in continuing our work to open the area up for industrial development, which we hope will create jobs and better our community.”
- Elaine Nash, Mount Carmel Fishermen and Recreation Committee

Funding was made available through the Regional Development Program which provides support to organizations for the development and implementation of economic initiatives that encourage regional and industry development, diversification and innovation. Under the program, financial assistance is provided in the form of non-repayable contributions, to a maximum of 50 per cent of total project costs.
