Strengthening Communities Through Strategic Investments
Literacy and Literary Sectors Supported with $12,000 Investment
Literacy NL and the Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador will receive Provincial Government funding totalling $12,000 to support initiatives that provide training and development opportunities.
“Comprehensive literacy skills and a well-developed literary sector
are an essential part of individual and community success. Literacy NL and
the Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador continually address the
scope of these demands; from ensuring individuals have essential skills, to
promoting the best of the province’s literary talent. It is important that
we invest in organizations that are working to support communities and I am
confident this $12,000 investment will assist both groups in advancing their
initiatives.”
- The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Innovation, Business and
Rural Development
Funding will support Literacy NL and the Writers’ Alliance to attend training and planning sessions focused on enhancing volunteer skill sets.
“Addressing the needs of literacy and essential skills is a solid
investment in the well-being of our citizens. Project funding made available
by the Department of Innovation, Business and Rural Development has helped
to enhance our programs and services, and equip the organization as a leader
in the literacy and essential skills development fields.”
- Caroline Vaughan, Executive Director of Literacy NL
The Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador provides a supportive
environment for writing and writers and promotes the development of the
literary industry throughout the province.
“With close to 500 members province-wide, as an alliance we are in a
strategic phase of development and to be effective on an on-going basis, we
require a knowledgeable and dedicated board of directors. Funding from the
Department of Innovation, Business and Rural Development enables us to
provide comprehensive orientation for our board members and helps them gel
as a high-functioning team to maximize their effectiveness and engagement as
we move forward in promoting the province’s burgeoning literary industry.”
- Alison Dyer, Executive Director of the Writers’ Alliance of
Newfoundland and Labrador
Through sound fiscal management and responsible decisions, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is strengthening the business environment, encouraging the development of innovative industries and building a vibrant economy.
