Fall Sitting Bills Focus on Safety, Well-being and Financial Security of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians

The fall sitting of the House of Assembly concluded today with several new acts being passed, most notably regarding public safety, child care and pension sustainability – areas that are important to and impact the well-being of individuals and families across Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Our government brought forward significant new bills this sitting and I am pleased to report it has been a very successful session. Public safety and well-being is paramount and our focus on creating legislation to assist with the search for missing persons, to make bicycle helmets mandatory and to ensure quality child care services, reflects what is important to the residents of the province. Sustainability of the pension plan was also advanced through legislation this session, helping to ensure the financial well-being of residents by allowing for a reasonable retirement income for public service employees and reducing the financial impact on the taxpayers of the province.”
- The Honourable Darin King, Government House Leader and Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

In addition to the Child Care Act, Missing Persons Act and Other Post-employment Benefits Eligibility Modification Act, the Atlantic Provinces Harness Racing Commission Act and the Chartered Professional Accountants and Public Accountants Act are other new acts which passed this session.

Amendments to acts made this session include An Act to Amend the Highway Traffic Act, An Act to Amend the Provincial Offences Act and an Act to Amend the Pensions Funding Act and the Public Service Pensions Act, 1991, among others.
