Government House Leader Pleased with Results of Spring Session

Government House Leader, the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Education, said today that the spring session of the House of Assembly accomplished significant results for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Third Session of the 47th General Assembly resulted in 23 pieces of legislation being passed. Some of the highlights include:

  • Bill 14, An Act to Establish and Implement a Province-Wide 911 Telephone Service for the Reporting of Emergencies, which will improve access to emergency services to residents by expanding Basic 911 telephone service province-wide;
  • Amendments to The Mental Health Care and Treatment Act which will ensure that patients are better informed of their rights and enable the appropriate use of community treatment orders; and
  • Bill 1, An Act Respecting Public Interest Disclosure, which will allow employees to disclose a serious and significant wrongdoing without fear or threat of reprisal.

“These enhancements will positively impact a great number of residents in the province,” said Minister King. “In addition, a great deal of work has gone into updating various acts in order to reflect current standards and practices.”

Minister King also noted that the session produced some healthy debate during the 39 sitting days of the legislature and thanked members for their contribution.
