Enhancing Long-Term Care for Families and Communities

New Protective Community Care Residence Officially Opens in Bonavista

A new 12-bed protective community care residence is now officially open in Bonavista. Through an investment of approximately $2.6 million, local residents will have increased access to specialized care to meet the unique needs of individuals with dementia. The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, was joined by Glen Little, MHA for Bonavista South, and representatives from Eastern Health for a ribbon cutting and tour of the facility.

“This new protective community care residence is more than a new facility. It is a home for those suffering from dementia, which will provide them with the care they need in a setting which is welcoming and supportive. We are investing in the families of this region who have loved ones affected by dementia. It is our responsibility to ensure that the care people need is available and they are treated with dignity and respect. The services provided here will enhance the continuum of specialized care available in the region.”
- The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services

The protective community care residence is designed to provide a home-like environment, supported by specifically trained staff, for individuals with dementia. The facility includes an onsite residential style kitchen, dining facilities, and lounge and recreation areas.

“It is important to have appropriate levels of care available to our residents throughout all stages of their life. The new protective community residence will enhance health care services available to the people in this region. Our government is committed to strengthening and enhancing long-term care and community support services for Bonavista and all regions of our province.”
- Glen Little, MHA for Bonavista South

The philosophy of protective community care residences is to provide a comfortable social environment that enables residents to function to their fullest capabilities. The focus of the care provided is on quality of life rather than rehabilitative care, and aims to provide normal living experiences along with 24-hour supervision.

“This protective community care residence was designed according to current research and best practices in dementia care. It provides an appropriate living environment, supported by staff educated to care for the needs of residents with advanced dementia, both of which clearly reflect Eastern Health’s priority of safe, quality care.”
- David Diamond, President and CEO, Eastern Health

The Provincial Government has made significant investments to enhance long-term care and community support services throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. New long-term care facilities have been opened in Corner Brook, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Clarenville, Lewisporte and St. John’s, with one more under development in Carbonear. In addition, protective community residences have been opened in Corner Brook and Lewisporte, a new facility is under construction in Clarenville and planning has begun for a residence on the Burin Peninsula.
