Strengthening Health Care Services for Families and Communities
$9.8 Million Investment Enhances Health Care Services in Happy Valley-Goose Bay
The residents of Happy Valley-Goose Bay and surrounding communities will benefit from $9.8 million in health care funding. The investment will be used to begin construction of the 20-bed expansion of the Happy Valley-Goose Bay Long-Term Care Home and to purchase new equipment and support infrastructure upgrades at the Labrador Health Centre.
“Quality health care is vital to the people of our province, and I assure the residents of Labrador that their health and the health of their families remains a priority for our government. Through this $9.8 million investment we are ensuring that the equipment at the Labrador Health Centre is upgraded and that residents in this region are positively impacted by the 20-bed expansion of the Happy Valley-Goose Bay Long-Term Care Home.”
- The Honourable Steve Kent, Minister of Health and Community Services
An $8.2 million contract has been awarded to increase capacity at the Happy Valley-Goose Bay Long-Term Care Home from 50 beds to 70. The 20-bed expansion will be completed by Pomerleau Inc. and is expected to be ready for occupancy in winter 2016. The facility provides levels three and four nursing care to residents and includes a 13-bed protective care unit, multipurpose room, quiet room, conference room, living room and a chapel.
“Labrador is growing socially and economically and our future is very promising. These investments reflect the Provincial Government’s ability to plan for the future and to anticipate greater demands for infrastructure that meet the needs of families in this area of the province. Labrador is, and will continue to be, a strong priority and focus for our government.”
- The Honourable Keith Russell, Minister of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs
An investment of approximately $1.6 million will support the purchase of new and replacement equipment at the Labrador Health Centre, including 14 patient beds, sterilizers, stretchers, IV pumps, vital signs monitors as well as a sound isolation booth used in audiology.
“This overall investment marks a key step in how our government is responding to the needs of the province’s aging population and all users of our health care system. It also highlights our commitment to advancing infrastructure that strengthens communities and improves the quality of life for residents.”
- The Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Transportation and Works
The expansion of the Happy Valley-Goose Bay Long-Term Care Home is one of several investments made as a result of $150 million secured as part of the Hebron Benefits agreement. Additional projects that will benefit from this funding include a new science centre at Memorial University and two new operating rooms at the Bliss Murphy Cancer Clinic in St. John’s.
“The investment of $9.8 million by the Provincial Government to build an extension on the Happy Valley-Goose Bay Long-Term Care Home and the purchase of new and replacement equipment for the Labrador Health Centre is welcomed by Labrador-Grenfell Health. The funding will enhance the capacity of the long-term care home and provide senior citizens and elders with a comfortable place to live amongst their friends and neighbours. The new and replacement equipment will improve the health care services which we provide to residents of the Happy Valley-Goose Bay area.”
- Tony Wakeham, President and Chief Executive Officer, Labrador-Grenfell Health
