$18 Million Health Care Investment Announced for Grand Falls-Windsor

Three multi-year redevelopment projects for the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre in Grand Falls-Windsor, valued at approximately $18 million, including investments announced in Budget 2014: Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook, were outlined today.

“Delivering health care is a continuous process that must be adaptive and responsive to our residents’ needs. As new technologies, best practices and demands increase, a hospital must transform itself to ensure that it provides the necessary and most modern-day equipment and services. The Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre provides services to Grand Falls-Windsor and many surrounding communities. This investment of $18 million for multiple projects will improve services in areas like endoscopy, dialysis and the laboratories, as well as extend the lifespan of the hospital.”
- The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services

Three main projects will be funded:

  • Over three years $11.8 million will be allocated for redevelopment work that focuses on patient safety including a new endoscopy suite and relocation of a surgical unit;
  • Approximately $5.7 million is allocated to continue the relocation and expansion of the dialysis unit to a more complementary space, increasing the number of dialysis stations from 11 to 15 which will allow for the number of patients to be treated to go from the current 54 up to 90; and,
  • $500,000 to begin planning for the redevelopment of the laboratories to create efficiencies, optimize workflow and increase patient safety.

“Today's announcement is a significant investment in the infrastructure at Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre that will provide new and modern facilities to enhance patient care and the working environment for our staff. Our priority is safe patient care. When we have the opportunity to design and renovate a part of our regional health centre, it gives us the chance to match the space to current work processes and needs which certainly improves quality and safety for patients."
- Rosemarie Goodyear, President and Chief Executive Officer, Central Health

Recently, five new state-of-the-art operating rooms were officially opened in Grand Falls-Windsor as part of the ongoing redevelopment of the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre. Combined with today’s announcement, approximately $86 million has been allocated for redevelopment projects, repairs, renovations and equipment for Grand Falls-Windsor health facilities since 2004.
