Increased Access to Health Services Benefitting Families and Communities

Contract Awarded for Development of New Adult Addictions Treatment Centre

A contract valued at $4 million has been awarded for the development of the Harbour Grace adult addictions treatment centre. The centre will be located at the former St. Paul’s School and is expected to be completed by the end of 2015.

“Our government has focused on providing new and enhanced services to the people of the province who require specialized mental health and addictions services. The new adult addiction treatment centre will use a holistic approach to treatment and address the individual’s physical, social, psychological and spiritual needs through individual, group and family counselling. The overall goal of this approach is to help clients reduce the risk of relapse and manage their recovery by achieving healthy, balanced lifestyles.”
- The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services

Anchorage Contracting Ltd. was awarded the contract to carry out construction activities related to the redevelopment, which will include 18 resident bedrooms and support areas, clinical and therapeutic spaces, as well as upgrades to the building systems, such as the HVAC and plumbing/electrical systems.

“We are pleased to be one step closer to opening the Harbour Grace adult addictions treatment centre, which will provide specialized care to those dealing with addictions issues. The treatment program to be offered will help ensure that most people who need this level of intensive treatment will be able to remain in this province, close to their families and their communities.”
- Beverley Clarke, Vice President responsible for Mental Health and Addictions Services at Eastern Health.

The new adult addictions centre is one of four mental health and addictions projects currently underway in the province to enhance services and programming. Two treatment centres will be opening this year to treat youth with addictions and complex mental health needs, and planning is progressing on the replacement of the Waterford Hospital.
