Investing in Wellness and Healthy Aging Benefits Families and Communities
$700,000 Announced for Wellness and Seniors’ Grants Programs
Funding, totalling $700,000, was announced for 100 community groups and non-profit organizations as part of the Provincial Government’s 2013-14 Health and Wellness Grants Program and Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Grants Program. The event took place today at Easter Seals Newfoundland and Labrador.
“Promoting health and preventing disease is a key priority for
the Provincial Government. The wellness and seniors’ grants programs provide
an opportunity for community groups and organizations to take action in
supporting the health and well-being of their citizens. The 100 groups that
will benefit from this funding now have the ability to impact change and
inspire healthy living and healthy aging at the grass-roots level.”
- The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and
Community Services
This year, Easter Seals Newfoundland and Labrador, has been awarded $10,000 under the Health and Wellness Grants Program, which will complement an additional $10,000 in one-time funding provided by the Provincial Government to support its Fit-Ability program. The program is designed to remove barriers to exercise that people with disabilities usually face, allowing the program’s participants to make health-improving lifestyle changes. A full list of grant recipients can be viewed in the backgrounder below.
"On behalf of Easter Seals youth and families I would like to
thank this government for investing in children, youth and families living
with disabilities in this Newfoundland and Labrador. All too often persons
with disabilities cannot access inclusive programs and services to improve
their physical and mental health; ultimately enhancing their overall quality
of life. This investment will enable Easter Seals NL to continue its
one-on-one physical fitness mentoring program that helps hundreds of persons
with disabilities set and achieve realistic goals in adopting healthier
life-styles".
- Mark Lane, Chief Executive Officer, Easter Seals Newfoundland
and Labrador
Recipients of a Health and Wellness Grant or Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Grant receive up to $10,000 to either fully fund a project or as a contribution towards the total project cost. Health and wellness projects must support healthy living and wellness in the areas of healthy eating, physical activity, tobacco control, injury prevention, sun safety and other wellness areas. The age-friendly grants are focused on building capacity within communities to create inclusive environments where all people are engaged in community life including older persons.
