Achieving Best Practices Supports Aquaculture Industry Success

Minister Congratulates Northern Harvest for Leadership in Best Practices

The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, extended congratulations today to Northern Harvest Sea Farms for becoming the first salmon farming company in the world to achieve a four-star Best Aquaculture Practices certification. This certification is provided by the Global Aquaculture Alliance, an international, non-profit trade association dedicated to advancing environmentally and socially responsible aquaculture.

“I congratulate Northern Harvest for being an industry leader, and for enhancing the reputation of Newfoundland and Labrador’s aquaculture industry worldwide. Salmon farming in this province is thriving, and a large part of that success is due to our industry’s ability to respond to consumer demand for seafood that is farmed in a responsible and sustainable manner.”
- The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture

Northern Harvest Sea Farms have been farming in Newfoundland and Labrador since 2008, and currently produces Atlantic salmon. In 2010, through the Aquaculture Capital Equity Program, the company received $8 million from the province to help expand its operations.
