Nicole Kennedy Wins the 2014 Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Scholarship

Nicole Kennedy of Spaniard’s Bay is the winner of the seventh annual Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Scholarship. The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, recently presented the $1,000 scholarship to Ms. Kennedy, which she earned based on her academic performance, her community involvement, and her essay response to the question “What is the biggest issue facing the province’s fishing and aquaculture industry?” Ms. Kennedy’s essay focused on the need to balance commercial interests with environmental concerns.

“I am pleased to award the 2014 Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture scholarship to Nicole Kennedy. Her insightful essay about balancing economic and environmental considerations within the seafood industry, her service to her community, and her many personal pursuits all speak to the bright future she has ahead of her.”
- The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture

Ms. Kennedy graduated from Ascension Collegiate last year with a cumulate average of 93 per cent, and has just started business studies at Memorial University. As a high school student she raised funds for various charities, played and coached a variety of sports, performed in dance recitals and regional drama festival shows, and participated in the Miss Teen Newfoundland and Labrador and Miss Teen Canada-World pageants.

“I thank the Provincial Government for this scholarship, which will support my studies within the Faculty of Business at Memorial University. I am very excited to begin my first semester at the university, and this scholarship will certainly help my transition into life at Memorial.”
