Engaging Youth in Marine Studies

Kimberly Jarvis Awarded Provincial Government’s 2014 Students on Ice Scholarship

Kimberly Jarvis, an 18-year-old student from Holy Name of Mary Academy in Lawn, was recently awarded a $12,000 Students on Ice Scholarship through the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture. The scholarship will enable Ms. Jarvis to learn about the importance of protecting marine environments while exploring the Arctic on a world-class research vessel staffed with many educators.

“The Students on Ice Scholarship is one of many initiatives by the Provincial Government aimed at engaging young Newfoundlanders and Labradorians in unique learning opportunities. I commend Ms. Jarvis for being selected by Students on Ice based on her academic achievement and community involvement, and wish her all the best as she takes on this exciting educational adventure.”
- The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture

Throughout the Artic expedition Ms. Jarvis will be an ambassador for Newfoundland and Labrador among 85 international high school students aged 14 to 18 years old. The students will be guided by a team of 35 world-class scientists, historians, artists, explorers, innovators and polar experts, as well as 30 public and private sector leaders.

“I am very pleased to note Ms. Jarvis’ selection for this scholarship marks the second year in a row a student from Holy Name of Mary Academy has earned the opportunity to participate in a Students on Ice expedition. This is another example of how this government is supporting learning opportunities that help students like Ms. Jarvis explore their potential, and I look forward to hearing about her experiences when she returns.”
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Education and MHA for Grand Bank

While attending school, Ms. Jarvis completed courses in advanced math, calculus, and physics through the Centre for Distance Learning and Innovation. She was actively involved in a variety of sports, competed in the Miss Teen Achievement Scholarship competition, and was a recipient of the Johnson Horizons scholarship. She was a participant in Allied Youth at the community level, and a Director on the Allied Youth Provincial Executive, providing leadership within an organization that encourages students to become involved in projects and issues that are important to their communities. She has also received a Memorial University Entrance scholarship and has been accepted to the university's Faculty of Engineering degree program.

“I am very eager to gain a better understanding of the Arctic and how it is being affected by climate change, and this Students on Ice expedition presents a once in a lifetime opportunity to do that. I thank the Provincial Government for making this experience possible, and look forward to sharing stories about my experiences.”
- Kimberly Jarvis, Students on Ice Scholarship Winner

In addition to providing scholarships, the Provincial Government engages youth in marine studies by funding the Dr. Wilfred Templeman Memorial Scholarship for graduate students, the Fisheries and Aquaculture Scholarship, and student placements at the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research at the Marine Institute.
