Certified Sealing Sessions Promote a Vibrant Economy
Provincial Government Supports Province-Wide Sealer Training Seminars
The Professional Fish Harvesters Certification Board provided 36 sealer information workshops throughout the province from March 3 to March 15 with the assistance of more than $32,000 from the Provincial Government. The one-day sessions reinforced humane harvesting practices, procedures for the identification of healthy seals, and proper quality and handling methods.
“The provincial sealing industry is committed to ensuring the harvest is being conducted using the most humane methods and to producing top quality products for world markets. The Provincial Government was pleased to provide more than $32,000 to support the industry’s pursuit of best practices, and I wish harvesters all the best as they prepare for the upcoming season.”
- The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture
As of 2014, the Federal Government has made these information workshops in humane harvesting mandatory training for licensed sealers. The Provincial Government has been a strong proponent for mandatory sealer training and certification to ensure the professionalism of all involved with the harvest.
“The seal harvest is sustainable, closely monitored, and carried out by well- trained professionals who are committed to maintaining a humane hunt that produces quality products. I thank the Provincial Government for its support of our efforts to standardize the industry and ensure the professionalism of all participants.”
- Mark Dolomount, Executive Director, Professional Fish Harvesters Certification Board
