Achieving Best Practices Supports Long Term Business Strategy
Minister Congratulates Norlantic Processors for Being First in the World to Achieve Best Aquaculture Standards Certification
The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, extended congratulations today to Norlantic Processors for becoming the first mussel plant in the world to be certified to the Best Aquaculture Practices processing standard. This certification is provided by the Global Aquaculture Alliance, an international, non-profit trade association dedicated to advancing environmentally and socially responsible aquaculture.
“I congratulate Norlantic Processors for being an industry leader, and
for enhancing the reputation of Newfoundland and Labrador’s aquaculture
industry worldwide. Mussel production in this province has reached record
levels, and a large part of that success is due to our industry’s ability to
respond to consumer demand for seafood that is farmed in a responsible and
sustainable manner. The Provincial Government has supported the achievement
of other sustainability certifications in the past, and will continue to
support this vibrant industry.”
- The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture
Norlantic Producers is based in Pleasantview, and in addition to its production facility, the company operates three mussel farm sites totalling 728 hectares. At present, the company produces approximately one million pounds of blue mussels annually, and sells its products to customers throughout North America.
Through sound fiscal management and responsible decisions, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is strengthening the business environment, encouraging the development of innovative industries, and building a vibrant economy.
