Responsible Decisions Benefiting Public Employees

Ushers Ratify Collective Agreement with Provincial Government

Ushers at Arts and Culture Centres across the province have ratified a collective agreement with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Each collective agreement the Provincial Government reaches with its employee groups is the result of dedication and hard work on behalf of negotiating teams. We are proud of this latest achievement and of all the agreements reached in the past year.”
-The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board

The Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE) represents the group of approximately 130 ushers who work at Arts and Culture Centres in Stephenville, Corner Brook, Gander, Labrador West, Grand Falls-Windsor, and St. John’s.

The agreement includes the same general economic increases as that reached with other NAPE groups − a five per cent salary increase over the term of the agreement. A pro-rated one-time payment is also included, which is tailored for the unique nature of hours worked by ushers. It is based on three tiers:

  • $500 payment if 500 hours or more worked in 2013;
  • $300 payment if 100 hours or more, but less than 500 worked in 2013; and,
  • $200 payment if less than 100 hours worked in 2013.

The Provincial Government has successfully negotiated collective agreements in the past year with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Association, NAPE, CUPE, and the Association of Allied Health Professionals. As well, a tentative agreement was recently struck with the Newfoundland and Labrador Nurses’ Union. These agreements represent approximately 27,700 public employees, and demonstrate the Provincial Government’s commitment to successful collective bargaining.
