Provincial Government Inviting Municipalities to Provide Feedback on New ATIPP Guide

The Provincial Government is inviting municipalities across Newfoundland and Labrador to provide feedback on the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy (ATIPP) Guide for Municipalities, a draft document designed to help municipal ATIPP coordinators carry out their responsibilities under the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

“The Office of Public Engagement is continuously looking at ways to provide assistance to ATIPP coordinators across the province. This new guide, designed specifically for municipalities, will assist municipal coordinators in handling their day-to-day access and privacy responsibilities and will help ensure they have the knowledge and resources needed to comply with the ATIPP legislation. Feedback received will ensure that the guide is finalized in a way which makes it user-friendly.”
- The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement

Distributed to municipalities across the province as a draft document, the ATIPP Guide for Municipalities provides guidance on the most common issues faced by municipal ATIPP coordinators, including the tabling of minutes of meetings, committee reports, in camera meetings, and assessment rolls. Feedback can be submitted by emailing ope@gov.nl.ca or by calling 1-877-895-8891 (toll-free). Comments will be accepted until January 6, 2015. To read a copy of the guide, please visit: www.atipp.gov.nl.ca/info/index.html.

“I encourage all municipalities to review the new draft municipal ATIPP guide and to provide feedback and suggestions to the Office of Public Engagement if they have ideas on how it can be enhanced. Municipal ATIPP coordinators play an important role in providing access to information and in protecting the privacy of people across the province. This guide demonstrates our government’s commitment to supporting municipalities and encouraging strong local governance.”
- The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister for the Department of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

Created by the Office of Public Engagement, the guide was produced in consultation with the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner, Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Department of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs.
