Preventing Violence in Homes and Communities

Fifth Annual Purple Ribbon Campaign Continues to Raise Awareness of Violence Against Women

The Provincial Government is pleased to announce the fifth annual Purple Ribbon Campaign to increase public awareness and responsiveness to the issue of violence against women in Newfoundland and Labrador. This year’s Purple Ribbon Campaign was launched today at Confederation Building by the Honourable Judy Manning, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Minister Responsible for the Status of Women. The minister was joined by representatives from community partners, including the Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women and the Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre.

“Our government continues to raise awareness of violence against women in order to positively change public attitudes and behaviours and ultimately to prevent these violent acts. We all have the responsibility to create homes and communities that are free from violence, and I encourage every resident to take part in the Purple Ribbon Campaign and help create awareness by wearing a purple ribbon lapel pin and placing purple ribbon magnets on vehicles. Together we can foster discussion and take further action to end violence against women.”
- The Honourable Judy Manning, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Minister Responsible for the Status of Women

The Purple Ribbon Campaign is part of the Provincial Government’s Violence Prevention Initiative, which begins annually on November 25 on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The campaign runs through the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women on December 6 and ends on December 10, which is internationally recognized as Human Rights Day. Overall, the campaign spans the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence, which are globally designated to raise awareness about gender-based violence as a human rights issue at the local, national, regional and international levels.
