Celebrating Growth in the Mineral Industry
Premier Recognizes First Nickel Production at Long Harbour
The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today formally recognized and celebrated first nickel production at the Long Harbour processing plant.
“It was an honour to participate in today’s event. Congratulations to Vale and its employees on the achievement of first nickel production. The hydromet processing plant is at the leading edge of innovation, and those innovative processes were developed, tested, demonstrated and proven right here in Long Harbour. The operation will be a major asset for Newfoundland and Labrador, driving future economic growth and prosperity in the province.”

The Premier was joined in Long Harbour by the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources; the Honourable Judy Manning, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador; Felix Collins, MHA for Placentia - St. Mary’s; Senator Norman Doyle; Vale Chief Executive Officer Murilo Ferreira; and employees of the Long Harbour processing plant.
“I want to echo the sentiments of the Premier and congratulate Vale and its employees on first nickel production. Vale has been working closely for many years with our government, Aboriginal communities, local municipalities and the Government of Canada on all facets of its operations, including the hydromet processing plant. Vale has invested billions in construction and labour in this project which will continue to bring benefits to the people of this province for many generations.”

Since construction started on the hydromet processing plant in Long Harbour, 25 million person-hours of employment have been generated with 80 per cent occurring in Newfoundland and Labrador.

- Recent employment figures for Vale’s activities in the province show about 1,200 women and men employed at the Long Harbour site, 475 working in Labrador and 100 working in St. John’s in various engineering, project management and corporate functions.
