Remembering Our Veterans

Remembrance Day Honours the Sacrifices of Veterans

November 11 marks Remembrance Day throughout the country and many communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador will be holding wreath laying ceremonies, parades and commemorative events.

“Each year, on November 11, we pause to reflect and honour our veterans. This year is especially important given the recent tragic events on our home soil, in Quebec and in our nation’s capital. I encourage all residents in Newfoundland and Labrador to demonstrate their appreciation for our veterans by wearing poppies and taking part in local Remembrance ceremonies.”
-The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

This is an important year marking the anniversary of several significant milestones: the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War; the 75th anniversary of Canada’s involvement in the Second World War; and the 70th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy.

Recognizing the contributions of those individuals that represented Newfoundland and Labrador in global conflicts reinforces the pillars outlined in Honour 100, which was launched in 2013 and commemorates the centennial anniversaries of the First World War through to 2018. Honour 100 is organized into five pillars – anniversaries, education, legacy, outreach, and research and development.

“With the many freedoms that we enjoy today, we must recognize and appreciate the contribution made by veterans, as well as those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. In addition, we must also respect and acknowledge the women and men who are currently serving our country and promoting safety throughout the world.”
-The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador encourages residents to participate in local Remembrance Day ceremonies throughout the province.
