Premier Davis Pays Tribute to James Greene, Q.C.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today paid tribute to James Greene, Q.C., a former Member of the House of Assembly in Newfoundland and Labrador, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 86.

“As a young man at the dawn of Confederation, Mr. Greene captured the attention of the adjudicators of the Rhodes Scholarship, who saw in him the spark of extraordinary potential. Mr. Greene rose to the challenge, meeting and exceeding those expectations through a life of exemplary public service. Whether in elected public office, community service, education, business or law, he brought his very best to the table, impacted the lives of thousands of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians for the better, and set an example for all of us.”
- The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

Having attended Oxford University as the Rhodes Scholar for Newfoundland and Labrador in the year of Confederation, Mr. Greene went on to practice law for 47 years. Mr. Greene served as the MHA for St John’s East and was leader of the Progressive Conservative Party and the leader of the Official Opposition from 1959 to 1966. He served on the boards of major corporations, including the Churchill Falls (Labrador) Corporation and Fisheries Products International Ltd., and enriched the province through service with the Memorial University Board of Regents, the Newfoundland Board of Trade, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in Canada, the Catholic Education Committee, the Catholic Education Council, the Red Cross Blood Procurement Committee, the Kiwanis Music Festival and the Kiwanis Club of St. John’s.
