Encouraging an Innovative Economy
Women’s History Month Celebrates Women in Business
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador acknowledges October as Women’s History Month, a time to encourage greater appreciation of the notable contributions of women in Canadian history. This year’s theme, Canadian Business Women – A Growing Economic Force, encourages women and girls across Canada to pursue opportunities in the business world.

This month is a good opportunity to recognize the entrepreneurship, innovation and diversity of the women in this province excelling in business and to celebrate their many achievements.”

The Provincial Government is committed to advancing the economic status of women. Through the Department of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development funding to organizations such as the Newfoundland and Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs (NLOWE), provides entrepreneurs with greater access to growth industries in this province and supplier diversity and export opportunities in international markets.
“A focus of the new Department of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development is to build on the synergies that exist between the two former departments and to continue to encourage business development opportunities throughout the province. Our government celebrates the work of women entrepreneurs in Newfoundland and Labrador and we know these women are part of a larger national community that is thriving and growing. NLOWE has increased services to over 500 clients in every region of the province and has experienced a 30 per cent increase in the number of women business owners that avail of their services and engage in business growth strategies. The future is bright for women-led business in our province.”

Gender equity and diversity planning within large resource development projects is also a priority of the Provincial Government. The Women’s Policy Office works closely with the Women in Resource Development Corporation, the Office to Advance Women Apprentices and NLOWE, to ensure that barriers to women’s employment and business access are reduced, particularly in the natural resource sector.
For over 20 years, Women’s History Month has helped women and girls by showcasing the vital role they have had, historically, in the Canadian economy.
