The Honourable Paul Davis Becomes Province’s 12th Premier

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and MHA for the District of Topsail took the oath of office today, becoming this province’s 12th Premier. Among those gathered for the swearing-in were 80 invited guests, including family, friends, colleagues and representatives of community groups.

“I am first and foremost a listener. The government I lead will occupy the high ground, and we will lead by listening. Tell me what you expect from your government and what you expect for our province, and then let’s work together as partners to make it happen.”

In an address following his swearing-in, the new premier noted that his administration would be forward looking and future thinking, and he would be taking the opinions, suggestions and guidance of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador as his primary counsel.

“Both economically and socially, the foundation we have built in Newfoundland and Labrador is absolutely rock-solid. But today is a new beginning. The new team I am in the process of putting together as your new government will be spearheading some real changes. We will focus on the long term and think strategically to make those long-term plans achievable.”

Premier Davis thanked out-going Premier, Tom Marshall, for his steadfast approach to governing the province during the transition period.

“Tom Marshall has done an incredible job of guiding our province and tackling the tough challenges during his time in office. From his Open Government Initiative, to the review of ATIPPA and pension reform, Tom Marshall led with vision and foresight. I thank Tom Marshall for his work on behalf of the people of the province.”

The Premier also commented on the tragic events in Topsail last night, noting his thoughts and prayers go out to everyone impacted by the traumatic circumstances, particularly the young boy who was attacked and his family.

“Right now a young man is severely injured in hospital, and we are left wondering why and how things like this could happen in what are otherwise our peaceful communities. I think I can speak on behalf of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians when I say our thoughts are with him and with his family.”
