Supporting Safe and Healthy Communities

Provincial Government and Community Partners Proclaim Sexual Violence Awareness Week

The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women and lead Minister of the Violence Prevention Initiative, is joining community partners to proclaim Sexual Violence Awareness Week from September 15-19.

This year’s theme of Breaking Barriers; Enhancing Community Response is focused on raising awareness, and working toward creating safe, healthy communities.

“All forms of violence, including sexual violence, are unacceptable. Through the Violence Prevention Initiative, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, in collaboration with community partners, remains committed to violence prevention against vulnerable populations in this province to ensure that all residents can live in safe communities free from violence.”
-The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women

The proclamation declaring September 15-19 as Sexual Violence Awareness Week in Newfoundland and Labrador will be signed by Minister Sullivan and members of the community on Monday, September 15, at 8:30 a.m. at the Capital Hotel.

“Sexual Violence Awareness Week provides an opportunity to raise awareness regarding the prevalence and scope of sexual violence. People are encouraged to talk openly about the realities of sexual violence in our everyday lives while acknowledging the strengths that exist in our community. The support has been tremendous year after year and educating on the realities of sexual violence is required to work towards a community free of violence and inequality.”
- Nicole Kieley, Executive Director, Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre

In addition to the proclamation signing, there will be a number of events taking place in St. John’s organized by the Sexual Violence Awareness Week Committee. Most notably, the Take Back the Night March, which will start at 7:00 p.m. in Bannerman Park on Friday, September 19. Information about other events can be found at https://www.facebook.com/#!/EndSV .

The Regional Coordinating Committees Against Violence are also organizing events throughout the province. A complete schedule of activities for Sexual Violence Awareness Week in each region can be obtained by contacting Regional Coordinating Committees listed in the backgrounder below.

Through the Violence Prevention Initiative (VPI), the Provincial Government provides operational funding to the 10 Regional Coordinating Committees Against Violence and the eight Women’s Centres. Funding is also provided to Aboriginal groups committed to the prevention of violence against Aboriginal women and children through the Aboriginal Women’s Violence Prevention Grants Program. The VPI continues to educate and increase awareness for violence prevention with social marketing campaigns such as, OutrageNL, Prevention of Violence Against Older Persons, Duty to Report Child Abuse, Respect Women, and the Purple Ribbon Campaign, as well as CyberSafe Girl, to ensure all residents live in safe and violence-free communities.
