Provincial Government Provides Funding for Energy Efficient Upgrades
The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Environment and Conservation, was joined by Corner Brook Mayor Charles Pender at a ceremony today announcing that the Provincial Government will provide $550,000 for phase two of energy efficient upgrades at the Corner Brook Civic Centre. The investment is through the Newfoundland and Labrador Green Fund administered by the Department of Environment and Conservation.
“Through this significant investment into the Corner Brook Civic Centre, the City of Corner Brook becomes a leader in energy conservation and efficiency. I congratulate them on their innovative thinking and the ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while creating substantial financial savings.”
- The Honourable Tom Marshall, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and MHA for Humber East
Through the Newfoundland and Labrador Green Fund, the Provincial Government invested over $300,000 in phase one of the project in 2011-12 for energy efficient lighting, fans, upgrades to mechanical insulation systems, expansion of building automation systems, vending miser controls and domestic upgraded hot water heaters.
Today’s funding will be used to install a heat recovery system and high stage heat pump allowing the removal of the oil fired boiler eliminating approximately 247,541 litres of oil and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 530 tonnes per year.
“This investment supports our government’s commitment to making strategic economic decisions based on providing a clean, sustainable environment and healthy ecosystems for generations to come. The creation of a greener facility is part of building our province’s resistance to the effects of climate change.”
- The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Environment and Conservation
The new heating system is designed to recover the waste heat from the refrigeration plant used in the arena for ice making and utilize it for space heating other areas in the facility.
“We appreciate the support we have received through both phases of this project from the Provincial Government. The Newfoundland and Labrador Green Fund has been instrumental in allowing us to make necessary upgrades to the facility. These investments allow the City of Corner Brook to conserve energy while saving more than $200,000 a year in energy costs, paying for itself in less than five years.”
- Charles Pender, Mayor of Corner Brook
The Newfoundland and Labrador Green Fund’s key mandate is to achieve real net reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
