Supporting Safe and Caring Communities

Provincial Government Invites Proposals for Aboriginal Women’s Violence Prevention Grants Program

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is seeking project proposals to support the prevention of violence against Aboriginal women and children through the Aboriginal Women’s Violence Prevention Grants Program.

“It is the 10th year that the Aboriginal Women’s Violence Prevention Grants program has been offered by the Provincial Government, and I would like to acknowledge the outstanding work that’s been done through the funded projects. Through an investment of $200,000 this year, organizations can work towards preventing violence against Aboriginal women and children so that everyone can live in safe and violence-free communities.”
- The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women and lead Minister for the Violence Prevention Initiative.

Grants up to a maximum of $30,000 per project will be awarded for 2014-15. The goal of the program is to support the development and implementation of culturally-appropriate approaches to prevent violence against Aboriginal women and children, and to increase awareness, education and leadership.

“Violence against Aboriginal women and children cannot be tolerated. Through these annual grants, our government is able to work collectively with Aboriginal partners to help advance valuable projects that address violence. In March 2014, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador supported an all-party resolution and continues to call upon the Federal Government to hold a national inquiry into missing and murdered Aboriginal women.”
- The Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister Responsible for Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs

Projects should include one or more of the following activities: developing public awareness and education materials or activities such as posters, pamphlets or advertisements; developing Aboriginal women’s leadership capacity; and developing and delivering cultural and wellness programs, activities, and training that support violence prevention.

Funding for the Aboriginal Women’s Violence Prevention Grants Program is allocated through the Violence Prevention Initiative. Since 2005, the Aboriginal Women’s Violence Prevention Grants program has provided approximately $1,320,000 for 92 projects throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
