Advancing Health Care that Supports Long-term Needs of Residents

More than $17 Million in Contracts Awarded to Support Development of New Health Care Facilities in Corner Brook

Provincial Government investments totalling more than $17 million will support the development of a new regional hospital and long-term care facility in Corner Brook.

The investment includes a $10.7 million contract being awarded to the Corner Brook Care Team, which is a consortium of companies with significant local, national and international experience in designing and constructing health facilities. Other contracts are being awarded to Marine Contractors and Brook Construction for site preparation in advance of construction beginning on the long-term care facility in 2015 and the hospital in 2016.

“In Corner Brook we are building a health care facility that is based on best practices in hospital design and construction, which ensures that the residents in western Newfoundland will receive the best possible care. Supported by investments totalling more than $17 million we are advancing important site preparation activities and entering the design phase of this major infrastructure development.”
- The Honourable Tom Marshall, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

The Corner Brook Care Team is a joint venture of B+H, Montgomery Sisam Architects, PCL Construction, and Marco Construction. The team will use the functional program, which outlines the operational design, programming, and project scope, to begin the detailed design of the five buildings that will comprise the health care complex. The design team includes architects, engineers and construction experts who will turn the functional program into design plans and specifications for the many building systems required in a modern health care facility.

“The collective experience of the Corner Brook Care Team will be an asset as we advance this important project for the people of western Newfoundland. The companies involved have well-earned reputations in their respective fields – B+H has completed more than 90 hospital projects worldwide, PCL Construction has built 285 health projects in the last decade, Montgomery Sisam Architects has completed 60 long-term care projects, and Marco Construction has worked on 16 health care facilities.”
- The Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Transportation and Works

This contract will result in two design packages, which will include one for the long-term care and central utility services buildings and one for the acute care hospital, administration, and hostel facilities. These will be used as the technical requirements for the construction of the health care facilities.

“This latest contract is a significant step in the development of the new regional hospital in Corner Brook. We are building a facility for the people of western Newfoundland and our government will ensure that they get the best possible facility that will provide for their health care needs, the needs of their children and the many generations that will benefit from this facility.”
-The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Health and Community Services

Marine Contractors of Pasadena was awarded a $3.9 million contract for site excavation and grading. The underground concrete water reservoir will be completed by Brook Construction of Corner Brook at a value of $2.9 million.

“The residents of Corner Brook and the western region will be well served with a modern health care facility. As the MHA for Humber West, I am pleased to see the advancement of the project through a $17 million investment for site preparation and design work. Residents will be extremely pleased with the facilities and medical services being advanced.”
- Vaughn Granter, MHA for Humber West

The new hospital will continue to offer the high level of services currently available at Western Memorial Regional Hospital including emergency care, obstetrics, palliative care, rehabilitation, inpatient mental health services and diagnostic services, in addition to new services such as radiation treatment and a dedicated space for a PET scanner.
