Government Delivering on Fire Safety Investments

New Funding Announced to Support Fire Services in Happy Valley-Goose Bay

Today, the Honourable Tom Marshall, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, announced that the Provincial Government and the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay are investing approximately $261,000 in cost-shared funding for the purchase of a new pumper truck to support fire protection services in the community.

“I am glad to be in Happy Valley-Goose Bay today to announce $261,000 in cost-shared funding for a new pumper truck – an announcement resulting from an investment of over $5 million through Budget 2014. Fire protection is a top priority for our government, and I believe that this investment will improve the safety of residents in this community for years to come. The requirement for this truck was raised during recent discussions as part of a capacity agreement to support increased activity in the region, resulting from the Muskrat Falls project. While discussions are still ongoing, this announcement is a demonstration of progress being made.”
- The Honourable Tom Marshall, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

Budget 2014: Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook, provides $5 million for the purchase of fire equipment and vehicles for communities throughout the province.

“The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay has a well-trained fire department with over 35 volunteers who are dedicated to proudly serving our community. It is important that government support these volunteers by providing this new and essential piece of equipment.”
- Keith Russell, MHA for Lake Melville

The pumper truck will be cost-shared with the Provincial Government providing 70 per cent of funding and the municipality covering 30 per cent. The vehicle is a four door, 1050 gallon per minute truck, with Class A foam capability.

“On behalf of the residents and our volunteer firefighters who serve our community, we are grateful for the support that the Provincial Government is providing through this investment in our fire department. The new pumper truck will greatly improve our response capabilities and there is nothing more important to the 11th council of Happy Valley-Goose Bay than the health, wellness, and safety of our residents.”
- Jamie Snook, Mayor, Happy Valley-Goose Bay

Since 2003, the Provincial Government has contributed to the purchase of 125 emergency response vehicles for communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
