Accomplishments of Province’s Amateur Athletes Celebrated

2014 Premier’s Athletic Awards Winners Recognized

A number of the province’s top young athletes were recognized today for their athletic excellence by the Honourable Tom Marshall, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. Through the 2014 Premier’s Athletic Awards, a total of $85,000 was presented to 127 provincial athletes at a ceremony held today at the Holiday Inn in St. John’s.

“I congratulate each and every one of the recipients honoured at the Premier’s Athletic Awards. They have distinguished themselves through their accomplishments as athletes and as individuals. The hard work and passion for sport exhibited by these outstanding young men and women is inspirational, and speaks to their drive and determination. I wish them well as they continue in their sport and in all their future endeavours.”
- The Honourable Tom Marshall, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

The Premier’s Athletic Awards Program was established in 2005 and provides grants in the amounts of $500, $1,000, and $1,500 to assist young athletes with the costs of training and competition at the elite level. The amount each recipient receives is dependent on their accomplishments, level of competition in which they are engaged, as well as the training requirements.

“The Premier’s Athletic Awards provide an opportunity to celebrate the athletic excellence of amateur athletes in Newfoundland and Labrador, and we are pleased to provide support as they continue to achieve their goals. Their commitment to their chosen sport is evident in the local, national and international recognition they receive, and I am delighted to help honour their achievements.”
-The Honourable Sandy Collins, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation

The awards ceremony also included the presentation of the Team Gushue Scholarship Awards to Benjamin Taylor of St. John’s in the sport of shooting, and Jillian Forsey of Kippens in the sport of athletics. These awards, valued at $5,000 each, are made available through application to the Athletic Excellence Fund Program.

Since their inception, the Premier’s Athletic Awards, Team Gushue Scholarship and the Elite Athlete Assistance Program have provided approximately $835,000 to support athletic excellence in Newfoundland and Labrador.
