Province Honours Olympian During her Visit Back Home

Kaetlyn Osmond Recognized for her Athletic Accomplishments

The Provincial Government hosted an event today at Confederation Building to recognize Kaetlyn Osmond, two time Canadian Women’s Figure Skating Champion and Olympic Silver Medalist. The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, along with the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education and MHA for Burin-Placentia West, were on hand to officially welcome Kaetlyn and congratulate her on her Olympic performance.

“Kaetlyn Osmond has found a place in the hearts of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, not only for her Olympic performance, but also for her many personal attributes. Throughout her time at the Olympics and in other competitions, she consistently displays a high level of professionalism and sportsmanship. We are proud of her many accomplishments, and we are absolutely delighted to welcome her back home for a visit and give her the recognition she deserves.”
- The Honourable Tom Marshall, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

In the 2012–13 season, Ms. Osmond won her first international title at the 2012 Nebelhorn Trophy competition. She then made her senior Grand Prix debut at the 2012 Skate Canada event, where she captured the gold medal. She went on to win her first senior national title at the 2013 Senior Women’s Canadian Figure Skating Championships and also placed eighth at the World Championships. In February, she won a silver medal in the Team Figure Skating competition at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.

“There is a level of commitment and an incredible passion that lies within athletes of Kaetlyn Osmond’s calibre, and she continues to demonstrate how these qualities can make dreams reality. Her journey is a wonderful example of how dedication, coupled with a love of a sport, can help you attain the ultimate in sport achievement, namely the Olympics. Our government is exceptionally proud of her outstanding accomplishments.”
- The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation

Ms. Osmond’s road to the Olympics began when she was two years old and became involved in figure skating. She moved to Alberta when she was 10 and joined the Ice Palace Skating Club, which she currently represents.

“Kaetlyn is an excellent role model for our students, in the way she conducts herself as an athlete and as an individual. Teachers throughout the province used the Olympic Games as a means of delivering on key curriculum outcomes in February, and it was of great benefit to have someone with whom students felt a connection. Being involved in sports includes physical activity and teamwork, but it also takes discipline and dedication. Kaetlyn’s career and life show where hard work and perseverance can lead. She is truly an inspiration to all our young people.”
- Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education and MHA for Burin-Placentia West
