Engaging the Community Sector

Volunteer Organizations Encouraged to Participate in Census

Announced last fall by the Provincial Government, a census of volunteer organizations – the first of its kind in Canada – is capturing the number, location, mandate and labour market information of volunteer and non-profit organizations in the province. With the first phase of the census nearing completion, community and non-profit organizations which have not been formally contacted to date are encouraged to call a toll-free line to participate.

“Through the census, the Provincial Government will obtain valuable information that can be used to inform policy and decisions relating to the community sector. We will also gain important insight into ways in which we can strengthen and better support the work of community and non-profit organizations across Newfoundland and Labrador.”
- The Honourable Steve Kent, Minister Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement

Volunteer organization representatives are encouraged to call the toll-free number at 1-855-681-8210 to participate in the survey.

The census is occurring in two phases. Over the past few months, the Newfoundland and Labrador Statistics Agency has been contacting volunteer and non-profit organizations to determine how many groups exist in the province, and where they are located. In cases where no phone number was available, a short form was sent by mail to collect basic contact information.

“The new toll-free number will help us complete the first phase of the census and allow us to move into the next phase, which will involve the distribution of a more detailed questionnaire to all groups. Through this process, we hope to gather meaningful information on the characteristics of these organizations.”
- The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board

The census is being conducted through a partnership of the Office of Public Engagement, Memorial University’s Harris Centre, and the Newfoundland and Labrador Statistics Agency. Information collected will be protected and will guide general findings, further research, and provide key information for the community sector in Newfoundland and Labrador.
