Responsible Decisions Support a Vibrant Economy

Road Improvements Coming for Western Region

Road improvements will see an early start for several significant construction projects in the western region as the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador advances one of the largest Provincial Road Improvement Programs to date under Budget 2014: Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook.

“As a government, we have a responsibility to maintain a safe and reliable transportation infrastructure network for all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. Our continued investment to improve roads and highways helps support further economic growth and improve overall safety for motorists.”
- The Honourable Tom Marshall, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

Road improvement initiatives to be undertaken in the 2014 road construction season include repairs to sections of Ring Road in Corner Brook, Route 430 Deer Lake to Cormack, Route 440 at Hughes Brook Hill and Pond Road from Rocky Harbour to Norris Point. Repairs are also included for Route 420, Jackson’s Arm Intersection, to Route 421 and upgrade to a section of Gallants Road, Route 403. Cold planing and repaving is also included for the Trans Canada Highway east bound Lewin Parkway Interchange to Riverside Drive Interchange.

“Our early tendering approach confirms that road work will begin as soon as possible this spring, helping us maximize the full construction season and allowing for a more effective bundling of road projects. Contractors benefit with larger tenders and the Provincial Government realizes a more efficient allocation of investment dollars.”
- The Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Transportation and Works

Budget 2014 provides more than $81 million for the Provincial Road Improvement Program, representing one of the largest investments to date to facilitate upgrades and enhancements to provincial roads, highways and bridges.

“I am very pleased to see so much road work included in this tender call and the early start to road construction will benefit the region.”
- Vaughn Granter, MHA for Humber West

Through sound fiscal management and responsible decisions, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is strengthening the business environment, encouraging the development of innovative industries and building a vibrant economy.
