Budget 2014 Initiatives for Labrador Focus on Transportation, Health Care, Education
The economic and social well-being of Labradorians is a priority of Budget 2014 with the continued development of the Trans Labrador Highway and new ferry services beginning in 2016, as well as investments in health care, education, and various programs and services. Guided by the Northern Strategic Plan, and other investments targeting Labrador, by the end of the 2014-15 fiscal year the Provincial Government will have allocated a total of $4.9 billion in Labrador since 2004.
“Our government fully appreciates the role of Labradorians in shaping Newfoundland and Labrador’s future. As Labrador’s economy grows and community needs change, the Provincial Government, through strategic investments in Budget 2014, will ensure that the appropriate transportation infrastructure, as well as access to health care, education and other important programs are in place.”
- The Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister Responsible for Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs
Major industrial projects, and Muskrat Falls in particular, will generate significant employment and economic opportunities for the people of Labrador.
“The Muskrat Falls project will provide power for industrial development and expansion within Labrador’s business community, particularly mining in Labrador West. During construction, the project will provide 9,100 person-years of direct employment in the province, of which 5,800 will take place in Labrador. The project will also generate approximately $500 million in income to business and labour for Labradorians and Labrador-based businesses.”
- The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources
