The 2014 Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games officially kicked off in Clarenville this past weekend and will run until March 9. The games are the largest multi-sport event for youth in the province, bringing together athletes from 11 to 18 years of age from various regions.
“I was delighted to be in Clarenville this past weekend for the official
opening of the Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games. These games will
promote the achievement of some of our province’s top young athletes,
showcase the participating towns and contribute to the economy of the
region. Our government is proud to support the 2014 games and the host Town
of Clarenville. I wish all participants the best of luck over the next
several days.”
- The Honourable Tom Marshall, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador
More than 1,300 participants from eight regions in the province and St. Pierre and Miquelon are participating in the games.
“For more than 38 years, the Newfoundland and Labrador Games program has
been encouraging participation in sport and the pursuit of excellence. Sport
is a very important aspect of our society and has many benefits aside from
the obvious physical ones. These games are a wonderful opportunity for
athletes, coaches, managers, volunteers and officials to not only showcase
athletic ability, but make lasting memories as well.”
- The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and
Recreation
The Newfoundland and Labrador Games are held every two years, alternating winter and summer, and are co-ordinated by the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation in conjunction with Sport Newfoundland and Labrador and provincial sports organizations.
“We are very proud that Clarenville is the host town for the 2014
Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games, and we are certain they will be a
tremendous success for everyone involved at every level. I wish to extend
congratulations to the Host Committee and all volunteers who have worked
tirelessly to bring these games to fruition. I also wish to extend best
wishes to participants in all sporting events, and welcome everyone who has
descended upon the area for the duration of the games.”
