Premier Marshall Commends Former Premier for Service to Province

The Honourable Thomas W. Marshall, Q.C., Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today acknowledged the resignation of former Premier Kathy Dunderdale as MHA for the District of Virginia Waters.

“Kathy Dunderdale served this province and the people of Virginia Waters with distinction. After devoting 10 years to provincial public life, Kathy has decided to return to private life,” said Premier Marshall.

Premier Marshall praised the former Premier for her work on behalf of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and the people of Virginia Waters.

"Kathy has done remarkable work for the province and spearheaded some of the most important initiatives in our history, from the Muskrat Falls project to the White Rose Extension project, to the CETA negotiations that will soon open wide the European marketplace to Newfoundland and Labrador fish products,” said Premier Marshall.

Referring to the general elections of 2003, 2007 and 2011, the Premier said, “The people of Virginia Waters certainly recognized the effective representation Kathy provided by re-electing her twice, enabling her to serve them a total of three terms, standing up for them and their best interests in the House of Assembly.”

“Kathy served our province in key ministries at crucial times, and made history in 2010 by becoming the first woman to lead our province as Premier and, again in 2011, by becoming the first woman to win a mandate as Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador,” Premier Marshall said.

“She is a role model for all Canadians, but her example is particularly significant for young women throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. As Premier, and in so many other capacities, she has written an important chapter in our province’s history, shattered glass ceilings and opened doors through which others will one day walk,” the Premier said.

“She has earned our respect and admiration, and I am so proud to have served beside her throughout the past decade as a colleague and a friend,” said Premier Marshall. “I wish her all the best as she returns to private life after having given so much to the province she loves.”
