Remembering the Ocean Ranger
Premier and Minister Recognize Anniversary of the Ocean Ranger Tragedy
The Provincial Government today recognized the anniversary of the sinking of the Ocean Ranger that occurred off Newfoundland and Labrador’s coast on February 15, 1982.
“Tomorrow marks the 32nd anniversary of the Ocean Ranger tragedy off the shores of our province, a sad reminder of the perils of our sea faring tradition. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends who were so deeply affected by the loss of their loved ones all those years ago.”

The annual Ocean Ranger memorial prayer service was held this morning at St. Pius X Church in St. John’s.
“The sinking of the Ocean Ranger is a solemn part of our province’s history, and serves as a reminder of the risks inherent in the offshore petroleum industry. We have a robust regulatory regime in place in Newfoundland and Labrador and we continue to advance measures to ensure the highest standards for offshore safety and environmental protection are maintained.”

Offshore safety is a priority in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Provincial Government remains committed to ensuring the health and safety of the province’s offshore workers and the protection of the environment.
