Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Chief

Chief Robert Johnston Stepping Down After 35-year Police Career

The Honourable Tom Marshall, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today on behalf of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, thanked Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Chief Robert Johnston for his service to the province. Chief Johnston, who announced this week that he is retiring from the police service, has been with the RNC since 1979 and has served as Chief since April 2010.

“On behalf of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, I extend sincere gratitude to Chief Johnston for his valuable contribution to policing in this province for the past 35 years. Having worked with Chief Johnston, I have witnessed first-hand his dedication and commitment to protecting the people of our province and ensuring the safety and security of our communities. Whether he was a new constable patrolling the streets of St. John’s or serving in his capacity as chief, Bob has been an exemplary police officer and an outstanding role model for all members of the RNC. On behalf of the people of the province, I wish him all the best as he begins this next chapter of his life.”
- The Honourable Tom Marshall, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

Chief Johnston’s retirement will be effective as of February 28. The process for appointing a new Chief will begin immediately.

“Chief Johnston has always been dedicated to ensuring that the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary’s vision of safer communities through policing excellence is met. Bob has been instrumental in the evolution of the RNC as it has become one of the world’s finest police services. The fact that he worked his way through the ranks from constable to chief is a testament to his hard work and the respect that he has garnered from many corners. I congratulate him on an outstanding career and wish him a pleasant retirement.”
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice
