Building Vibrant and Sustainable Communities

Innovation, Growth and Interactive Discussions Highlight Third Community Sector Summit

The community sector and the Provincial Government are meeting today at an interactive, innovative community summit. The Honourable Steve Kent, Minister Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement, provided opening remarks at the multi-site event which began this morning in St. John’s and includes participation by more than 170 individuals province-wide.

“The Community Summit represents a unique way to recognize volunteers and non-profit organizations, and it strengthens the relationship between the community sector and government. Volunteers and community organizations deliver valuable services across the country. Nowhere is that more true than in Newfoundland and Labrador, where volunteers give 155 hours of service per year on average.”
- The Honourable Steve Kent, Minister Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement

Hosted by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and connected by interactive technology from four locations – Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Corner Brook, Grand Falls-Windsor, and St. John’s – Community Summit 2014 will explore opportunities and identify common goals for the future.

Through a mix of technologies, and facilitated by the Office of Public Engagement, the summit will help volunteer and non-profit communities network through table discussions, polling questions and interactive workshops. This is the third summit of its kind in the province.

“This is a meaningful event, one which enhances the role of the community sector in Newfoundland and Labrador. The efforts of the Provincial Government to develop an environment which fosters learning, discussion, and the sharing of ideas are important, because they are supporting the incredible work of the sector throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.”
- Penelope M. Rowe, Chief Executive Officer, Community Sector Council Newfoundland and Labrador

Created in 2012, the Office of Public Engagement includes the Rural Secretariat, the Voluntary and Non-Profit Secretariat, the Youth Engagement office, the Strategic Partnership Initiative, and the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Office.
