Protecting Privacy and Safeguarding Data for Residents

Provincial Government Encourages Privacy Awareness on Data Privacy Day

Today, on the eighth International Data Privacy Day, the Provincial Government is raising awareness and reminding residents of the importance of data security and protecting personal information.

Data Privacy Day is commemorated internationally, with events being held in major centres across Canada and around the world, in an effort to generate discussion about data privacy.

"International Data Privacy Day is an ideal time to learn about protecting personal information and data security. With the growth of social media, regular use of computers, and new developments in electronic media, technology is a vital part of our daily lives. Today, more than ever, it is important that residents are aware of the tools available to protect their personal information.”
- The Honourable Steve Kent, Acting Minister Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement

The Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Office, of the Office of Public Engagement, encourages all individuals to take the time and ensure their software is up to date and passwords are strong. In addition, it is important to review privacy settings on social networking sites to ensure that that personal information is limited from public accessibility. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to open and transparent government and to engaging youth, the volunteer sector, families and communities to build a vibrant and prosperous province.
