Premier Honours Bas Jamieson for His Contribution to Open Public Discourse

Today, the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, expressed her condolences on the passing of Bas Jamieson.

“Bas Jamieson was one of Newfoundland and Labrador's best-known and most-loved radio broadcasters,” said Premier Dunderdale. “His lengthy contribution as host of VOCM’s OpenLine provided an opportunity like no other for people everywhere to voice their concerns, engage public officials and make a personal contribution to their province.”

“For four decades, Bas Jamieson made a formidable contribution to open public discourse in Newfoundland and Labrador, giving people a moderated forum to air grievances and debate issues that were important in their own lives and communities - issues that were important to all of us,” said Premier Dunderdale. “He always let people know that their views mattered. He certainly challenged callers whenever he believed it was necessary, and at all times, he treated people with dignity and compassion. Bas was known and loved by everyone, and he will be greatly missed.”

Premier Dunderdale offered her deepest condolences to Mr. Jamieson’s many loved ones. “I extend my personal sympathies to the Jamieson family, who have chosen the perfect epitaph for Bas by recalling the words he immortalized in Newfoundland and Labrador when signing off from Open Line: ‘Do something nice for somebody today, you’ll feel better for it. Bye bye for now and God bless.”
