Figure Skater Kaetlyn Osmond Named to Canadian Olympic Team

After winning her second straight Canadian Women’s National Figure Skating Championship this past weekend in Ottawa, Marystown native Kaetlyn Osmond made her country proud once again when she was named to the Canadian Olympic Team.

“On behalf of the Provincial Government, I wish to extend heartfelt congratulations to Kaetlyn on her outstanding achievement. She has certainly made her province and her country very proud. Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are renowned for their perseverance, and Kaetlyn certainly demonstrated this over the past year. We wish her every success at the 2014 Winter Olympics. It will undoubtedly be the experience of a lifetime.”
- The Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

Ms. Osmond secured a spot on the Sochi Olympic team after winning the 2014 Canadian Women’s National Figure Skating Championship this past Saturday. She scored 207.28 in her program, which included six triple jumps. The score was the second highest in the history of the event.

“Earning a place on the Canadian Olympic Team is truly an honour, but coming back after a year plagued with injury to win a second consecutive national championship thereby ensuring a spot on the team is incredible. Her passion and tremendous dedication to her sport is inspiring, and I wish her and the Canadian Olympic team the best of luck next month at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. We will certainly be watching!”
- The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation

The Canadian Olympic Committee announced the 17 skaters who will represent Canada at the 2014 Winter Olympics at a special ceremony in Ottawa on Sunday. The Winter Olympics will be held February 7-23 in Sochi, Russia. Figure skating events begin on February 6, one day before the official opening ceremony.

“I offer my sincere congratulations to Kaetlyn on her remarkable achievement. She is an inspiration to young and old alike and her family, friends and supporters on the Burin Peninsula and throughout Newfoundland and Labrador are thrilled that she will be representing Canada next month at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. We wish her every success.”
