Responsible Investments in Sustainable Resource Management

Hunting Season Opens in Newfoundland and Labrador

Residents and visitors to Newfoundland and Labrador begin the annual hunting season with the big game season opening tomorrow (Saturday, September 13) in central and western regions of the island and Labrador. Sunday hunting is permitted between October 5, 2014, and April 30, 2015, in all areas, provided hunters have a valid licence and the season for the game being hunted is open. The eastern region big game season will open on October 4, 2014. Small game and trapping open in the coming weeks.

“Hunting and trapping provide the opportunity to experience Newfoundland and Labrador’s great outdoors. The activities play an important role in the management and conservation of our wildlife resources and have vital social, cultural and economic value in the province. Our government is committed to ensuring healthy and sustainable wildlife populations and will continue to invest in programs and resources to monitor and protect wildlife and habitat for the benefit of the people of the province.”
- The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Environment and Conservation.

Hunters and trappers are reminded that responsible and safe hunting practices are a priority particularly when using firearms. All new hunters must complete the provincial Firearms Safety/Hunter Education Course. New hunters interested in the big game licence draw for 2015 must complete the course on or before November 30, 2014, to meet eligibility requirements. All outdoor users should prepare for unexpected emergency situations such as becoming lost or having to deal with adverse weather conditions.
