Hopedale Remediation Project Entering Phase Two
Tenders have been awarded and site work is set to begin later this month on phase two of site remediation in Hopedale, the Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Environment and Conservation announced today.
“We have made a long-term commitment to the community of Hopedale to clean up the former American Radar Site and ensure it meets current acceptable environmental standards. When this phase is completed, we will have invested more than $12 million since 2008 to remediate the soil in residential and public areas to ensure there is no unacceptable risk to human health or the environment.”

Environmental consulting firm Aivek-Stantec Limited Partnership has been awarded a $600,000 contract to manage the remediation project over the next three years. Sanexen Environmental Services Inc. has also been awarded a contract valued at $4.85 million to complete site remediation activities over the next three years. The work will involve the excavation, transportation, treatment and disposal of soil impacted with PCBs, metals, and petroleum hydrocarbons.

- Budget 2014: Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook announced $6 million in funding over three years for the second phase of remediation at the former military site in Hopedale.
- To date, more than $12 million has been committed to complete environmental site assessment and remediation work at Hopedale.
- Since 1998, a further $13 million has been spent on assessment and remediation of other impacted sites in the province.
