Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Joan Shea, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS RELEASED:

Burin Peninsula Five Mile Pond Area ATV Trail      (Reg. 1736)
Proponent: Calvin Eddy and Henry Fiander

Bellevue RV Park                                             (Reg. 1731)
Proponent: Rowe & Company Ltd.

Paradise-ACAN Pre-Fabricated Paint Booth          (Reg. 1730)
Proponent: ACAN Windows Inc.

Gill Mine Re-activation Project                          (Reg. 1728)
Proponent: Labrador Iron Mines Ltd.

The project is released subject to the following conditions:

  1. Labrador Iron Mines Limited is required to update the Schefferville Area Iron Ore Project Environmental Protection Plan to include the Gill Mine Re-activation Project and to address, but not be limited to, caribou monitoring and mitigation in the vicinity of the project. The updated plan must receive the approval of the Minister of Environment and Conservation prior to the start of construction.
  2. Labrador Iron Mines Limited is required to update the existing Schefferville Area Iron Ore Mine Newfoundland and Labrador Benefits Plan and Woman’s Employment Plan, to include the Gill Mine Re-activation Project. The updated plan(s) must be submitted and approved by the Minister of Natural Resources and the Minister Responsible for the Status of Women prior to the start of construction.

The project is released subject to the following conditions:

  1. A 30-metre vegetated buffer is to be maintained from waterbodies and wetlands except for those crossings that may be approved under the Water Resources Act.
